Sarah Bellamy - Botany Bay - 1787

18th Januray,1787

Ello it's me Sarah again and we are in Botany Bay finaly! We had a pretty hard time getting here there was the rough waves, the Dutch Govener not wanting us and us convicts were not allowed of the ship  at Rio de Janiero. All us covicts were expeting to get free but nooooo we have to work it sucks. We have to build houses while everyone else sits and relaxes.

John Ward - Botnay Bay - 1788

18Th January  1788

Hello I'm dead and I have been hauting people getting my revange. The reason I'm dead is because of the mutiny. I remember the fo rough was tires at Van Dieme 's Land (Tasmania)  but we didn't stop because it was to rough at sea. When we got there they put arrows  on our pants but no one Knows why because they didn't put them on the rich people. We got one day rest and then  we started working. We had to cut the grass, catch fish and start cutting down some trees. But we did that for  nothing because the captain said " This place is terrable I heard there was Port Jackson nere". So we then moved to Port Jackson and started to build the colony for real this time. The next day the captain rasaid the Union Jack.

REMEMBER  I did none of this, I was dead.

The food is horible I cant sleep and its hot and sticky. I cant wait until we arrive at new holand I think its calld. I cant belive we dont get much food. I wish that the food is better then this sloppy soup. The toilet is a bucket and it only gets emty once a day. I wish we get less of the discusting food. Why do the girls get less I want less discusting sludge to eat.  I wonder why there isn't any light do we diserve this I just hope there isn't any more stopping after this. Any way I would love is if the gards would change there minds an send me back to Englend. I think I willgo Back home after seven years.

13th October,1787

Ello it's me John. We all just left Rio and were heading to Cape Town. (3 days later)We are neally at Cape Town I don't think I've told you this but im on the ship the Alexander and all the convicts had a bit of mutiny today and I was involved in it acually I was the leader of it. but before us convicts could do any more Captain Phillip got all those annowing marines and made go back to the hulks. We just reached Cape Town and the Dutch Govener will only give us three days of bread.that is not much for us convicts. But luckily Captain Phillip is asking for more.I think we are leaving Cape Town right now and they put animals on board and I think some of them are angry. But we don't have much food for all the animals so after a while I think they will all be angry soon.

Ann Martin - Rio de Janeiro - 1787

5 th August , 1787

Ello, it's me we arrived at Rio de Janeiro after being in stuffy ship. Captain Arthur Phillip says we should stay here for a month or two .I hope so it feels nice to be out in the fresh air. We'll we only go out for about three or two minuites but it is the most time we go out into the fresh air but when we go out it is boling hot most of the time .While the marrines collect bananas, yams, oranges, limes and guavas storms have hit there are just getting ready for Sunday's trip to Cape Town .Since I left I have made a few frineds like those young ocean pearls but I don't like those boys they try to do bad things to you they even say we are the ones who trick them .This appeny dip is like bucket and pail, gaol. Animals are making it even more worse .When we leave I hope there is not a huge storm .They are making us get all the supplies but we only go out for about five minutes because they don't wanna risk a chance of us esacping or us taking over the ship .Well that is all I am going to  write today but I will see you next nickle and dime !!!!

William Farely-5th August- 1787- Cape Town

5th August 1787

It's so foggy ! Did you forget me name already? Look in me eyes me name is William Farely, think the Alexander the  ship had a bit of munity. John Caesar Cape Town 1787

13 October 1787

Today we are in Cape Town. Other convicts are armed with pistols, knives and iron bars Dutch Governor is not happy to see us. We are vomiting every where and the Governor will only allow us to have three days bread . We are traveling through a lot of fog the fog is making the journey much harder. Today we are about to leave but with stock and grains but we do not have enough hay to fead our animals on board we do not know how long the animals will survive we do not know what to do when that happens. Some convicts have very bad sicknesses like scurvy.More women are geting there Barnet fair shaved.we have had a few deaths from Tenirreife and bigger storms are coming each day we get closer and closer to Botany Bay in New Holland.

John Cuss- Cape Town 1787

13th October 1787

BANG! Sorry about that theres some backround noise there don't know whats going on. Anyway its been terible the last few days here Sam has had the Flu and its hard to get both our bloomin meals back to us. All of us were expecting to get the usel of fresh fruit but apperently, the captin siad that we woudent get very much because of the Governor is........ ticked of about us coming here! We are beeing let up deck even less than useol . When I was let up deck I found out that the gun fire at the start was a marine trying to scare the convicts on the Alixsander because of an atempt to mutiny on that ship. Thats allso one of the resons why were alowed up deck less. Im realy worried about Sam ,he's realy sick now I can't imagene the journey without him he helps me keep my serve of food beeing taken. Its so cramped in here coz the Bloomin captin has bout some more animals and there dieing coz we coldent get much food for em. Can't wait till we get to New Holland/Australia so we can get out of here. Fingers crossed for a pardon! That would be the life a free pice of land and ill be able to farm chiching chiching $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

John Carney - Cape Town - 1787

13th October 1787

Ello leavin Rio now. Got lots of fresh food. The marines are getting about 30 times what I get. So far after Rio I got barely any fresh food. All I got was about one quarter of fresh bread. I also had some old food that I kept from before we were at Rio. Me belly is gettin hungry. I am staring at the marines food that he has. I am lookin foward to goin to some random place called Cape Town for all the good food. Lookin for the cow ,that came down to this level, so I can get a small bit of milk. By the way, we got some animals in Rio. We have just got to Cape Town. I heard some convicts on the Alexander tried to mutiny with pistols, knives and iron bars. While the marines were gone, I went up to the main deck. I looked around. This place is quite weird. I heard that the governor was not giving us much food. That means not much fresh food when we get going. Aurthor Phillop is demanding more food for the fleet. I am making a bit of noise and the marine came up and was so scared of the moving barrel. The marine shot the moving barel (which I am inside). Sadly I died but I can still see everything. I am a ghost. I know I was a ghost because I can not touch anything. The crew are coming back now. I am staying at the top deck because no one can see me.

Margaret Darling- Cape Town

13th of Octber 1787

Hello .I'm back again. You're probly wondering were in the world me are ! Were at Cape Town. Can I let you on in a little secrect ? Also the Duch Govenor only gave us three days of  bread ! That Duch Govenor must not have a noggin or mabe he's lost his mind or he just got a problem with the Britsh.  I imagen that the  Duch Govenor has big fat red pinpulle on his face . I wish that this was the place that we stop at . Were about to set sail now. Bye Bye.

John Ward - Cape Town - 1787

13TH October 1787

Hallo here I am Cape Town, South Africa. This time I believe we're at Africa. I just got hit with an iron bar yesterday when we had a mutiny but the marines stopped us and 2 people died by a pistol and 1 died by knife and 11 were injured. The governor is only giving us three day's worth of bread and fruit and vegtables the captain asked for more but the said no. It's so cramped with all the animals especially with 3 bulls and 2 pigs and all the other stuff is on the other ships. Also it's so loud and you can bearly get any sleep at all and now there's now place to sit and eat your food. But the clothes aren't getting any better only more itchy. It is not very warm here.

Jane Poole Cape Town 1787

13th October,1787

Ello a again we are at  Cape Town and we have these silly animals on board. They are stinking out the place and it smells disgusting down here. my friend has died on the way to Cape Town. Her name was Mary Braund she was a good friend to me and I was a great  friend to her. It is hot down here and it is a mess. the Dutch Govermor is not geving a lot of food for us and the aminals. we are going to die on this ship if we don't have a nuff food

Sarah Bellamy - Cape Town - 1787

13th October,1787

It's me Sarah again and now we are in Cape Town. Some say that the Alexander had a big war against the convicts and the marines, guess who won...?The marines. When we got to Cape Town and the Dutch were not happy they wouldn't even give us a dicent amount of food for the rest of the journey. I can't Adam and Eve that every one cares about feeding the silly animals on board, they should be more certan on feeding us convicts than some silly old animals.I hate being on this ship I have been sick about ten times but I have atleast a friend to help me along the journey (Margret Dawson).

Thats all from me
see ya slater.

William Douglas - Rio de Janeiro - 1787

5th August, 1787

Hi me name is William Douglas I just got to Rio de  Janeiro it's so hot at Rio de so Janeiro. We are starving and we are geting all the tents for the soldiers but it's taking us so long I wish I was never a convict. We are ready to go to bed but the soldiers said that were not allowed to go to bed. They said to work for them. Now it's day time where going to find food but first we have to get chained so we don't run away. Now we are leaving to get food for all the convicts and the soldiers to eat so we're not starving we're geting fruit and meat.

Charlotte Cook -Cape Town 1787

Phebe Flarty-Cape Town-1787

13th October 1787

G'day, Phebe Flarty here! T'day I'm in this place called Cape Town in South Africa! Apparently it's ruled by this Dutch person, but let me tell yu... he's not a nice one. He's  only giving us three days worth of bread but the captain is goin to talk to the Governor tomorrow! On the way over here there was this really thick kind of fog that sort-of reminds me of England. I can't Adam and Eve that the old-looking Dutch guy isn't lettin us poor convicts a decent amount of food! Now if you're the kind for some exitement do I have a story for you... now listen closely 'cause I overheard one of the marines say that over on the Alexander there was a muteny! Maybe if we all work together we could have a muteny, then we could finaly go up on deck when we want or we could have one of those fancy cabins or if we're lucky we could have ten times our weekly rasions! Oh that would be gr8! Maybe later. Well that's it from me...Bye ;)

John Owen  Tenerife 1787

We are now at Tenerife. It took 21 days to get here, eight convicts are already dead. On the way to the  Canary Islands their was brutal storms and unusually cold weather. The weather at  the Canary Islands is tropical weather. Us convicts are sometimes allowed on deck but not very much. The conditions were not pleasant but certainly could be worse .

Robert Abel-Rio De Jenario-5th Augest 1787

Hello me name is Robert Abel. Ok so we first stopped and now were moving. Me family are probably mad at me. Any way, lets talk about why we stopped moving are we there yet, have we stopped so we
can get suplies or make repais. I am absolutely sick of staying in this junkyard. Why are we not getting out? This journy is taking a long time. I just wish prison never existed because I am not liking the way that they just stop sudenly and go again.

Margaret Darling -Rio de Janerio

5th August,1787

Ello now we are at Rio de Janerio. I am all happy cause we get fresh fruit and veg today i can just taste the yummy juice of the fruit and the crunch of the vegetables. The bad thing is that a cupple of nights ago there was this big storm and every one got sea sick and i was one of the unlucky ones cause i flew of me hamock like it was a bat and i was the ball! It was tearable! And i think i was the only one to fall of my bed cause i was one of the smallest.Well some one told me that we had to stay here for a month. Well all that i hope is that we get some more fruit and ved and there is no more storms on the way.

James Heading Rio De Janeiro 5th August 1787

Sarah Bellamy - Rio de Janerio - 1787

Its me Sarah Bellamy again and today we are in Rio de Janerio.I hate it here we convicts arent
allowed to go on deck and it sucks but on the bright side Captin Arther Phillip is providing us with fresh fruit and vegies. I think he is doing this just to keep us from getting sick so we can be his little slaves. But im going to plan an escape when we get there and I hope I have me fellow convicts on my side for this trick. We have to stay like this for one whole month. The clothes they are giving us are sooo itchy and they arent giving us any bloomin pantihose I cant stay like this forever they have to stop.Last time I was on a ship like this I got sea sick and I hope I dont get sick on this trip because last time Brad 'the strong convict' said he would rip my spine out if I did it again. Now I feel sick..

Thats all from me see yus salater

John Ward-Rio de Janeiro-1787

6TH August 1787

Hallo here I am Rio de Janeiro John Ward. We've been here for about a month and are leaving in three days.  At the moment i'm not feeling sick like I was half way here. Its been sort of boring lately since were only aloud on deck 30 minuttes every three days and at the moment the marines and all the people are outside colleting food, such as Fresh meat, fresh fruit and fresh vegtabales for us but I don't know why they don't even care about us. I'm feeling happy and exited at the moment. We went up deck yesterdayand it was burnning hot. At the moment I can not stop scratching my clothes because the are sacks and are so itchy.

John Hatcher-Rio de Janeiro-1787

Hello I'm John Hatcher (I think you new that but any way) and where at Rio de Janeiro, yay (not). I don't like that because us convicts have to stay in this stinckin ship while the others get to go out and have some fun, well at least I think that because how am I suppost to know if I'm  down here in the hulks. the one thing I do like is that we get some fresh food, but that won't last forever. So when all the fresh food is gone we have to go back to the disgusting grool and ships biscuit. Lately I have not been feeling the best, so the fresh food might make me feel better. Last night something was really anowing because us convicts have to stay in a hammock with 3 people and he pushed me out of thee hammock into the fecies and didn't even realise.

William Brice - 1787 - Rio de Janeiro

Ello. Me name is William Brice. We've left Tenerife and we're head'in for Rio de Janeiro. Hopefuly we get some more food. The gaurds are terreble to us convicts. Lucky for us we don't have itchy clothes......or not. Great, now we have to put up with clothes like this! Sometimes I wish I was dead. I once tried to kill myself, but them gaurds caught me doing it. "We're here" said a gaurd. Rats these days. They always try to nible me. I wish I was a rat sometimes, but I'm not. I just heard that we're stay'in here for a month. Wow, I haven't looked at this place! It's ten times better than old England.

Every time I think about the knew land I have nightmares the next night!!! The animals keep dieing so that makes the smell worse and it also meens that its less food for us every day. I won't to go home............. :(            Atleast they're feeding me for once. Back in prison I had to either steal from others or bribe the prison guards!    That's it from me...

is crunchy food. I am trying to sneak over to a hammock to hide from the marine. I got me self into a bit of trouble. Oops the marine caught me. "50 lashes" said the marine. Uh oh. I saw someone who got lashes and when I saw his back I almost fainted.CRACK! CRUNCH! Wow that hurt. SNAP! POW! Bad news, I have a  realy annoyin pain in me back. Good news, me 50 lashes are over. Finaly we have reached Rio. I am bored of waiting in the hulk. Good thing we are stoped so I do not get sea sick. When a rich man came down to give the marine some fresh food I could not belive me eyes. He had a lot of fresh food, a lot of wood to fix the dodgy hulk and a lot of extras like sails, telescopes and a compass.
