- My name is John Hudson. I'm thirteen years old. I was sentenced to transportation on the hulks 4 years ago. I stole 22 shillin's. I would do anything to take that day back when I stole them shillin's. All I can do is look forward to this sailing trip which will bring us to this strange new land. Hopefully it will mean a better life for all of us. Maybe I could get me old job back as a chimney sweep! I'd love that. It's so busy here at the moment in Portsmouth. Everyone's running around here and there, and we've been helping to load the ship with all the supplies. I'm sailing on the Friendship. Me mate Jimmy says that it could take us four months to get to this new place called Australia. That's a really long time!! Hopefully it's warmer there than it is here. Me trousers have holes in them and my gloves do too. I'm freezing! I hope God looks after us on our long journey and brings hope for all us in this new land.
